The Belize Packing List for a Villa Escape

Here’s the good news about your Belize packing list: you need less than you think. Island life runs on swimsuits, sandals and one nice outfit for dinner. The trick is packing for three very different days: lazy ones by your pool, salty ones out on the reef, and the odd muddy one on the mainland.

This is the list we send our own friends before they fly down.

Start with what’s already in your villa

Before you stuff a second suitcase, know what’s waiting for you. Every villa is a little different, so check your listing, but most M&B villas come with:

  • A full kitchen with pots, pans, knives and a proper coffee setup
  • A washer and dryer, which means you can pack for half the trip
  • A private pool and deck furniture
  • Free WiFi throughout the villa
  • Air conditioning in the bedrooms

That washer changes everything. Pack four days of clothes for a seven-night stay and do one load midweek. Your back will thank you at the airport.

And you don’t need to haul snacks or sunscreen from home. There’s a grocery store and a pharmacy right inside the village gates.

Pool and beach club days

This is where you’ll spend most of your time, so pack for it properly.

The basics

  • Two or three swimsuits. One drying, one on, one spare. Wet suits never quite dry overnight in the humidity.
  • A cover-up or linen shirt. Something easy to throw on for lunch at the Pool Club.
  • Flip-flops or slides. You’ll live in them.
  • A wide-brim hat and polarized sunglasses. Polarized lenses cut the glare off the water, and you’ll actually see the colour of the reef from the boat.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen. Mineral formulas with zinc oxide are kindest to the coral. Bring a stick for your face too.

For Mistico Beach Club

The boat shuttle over is about 15 minutes of turquoise water and wind in your hair. Pack a small tote with:

  • A dry bag for your phone and cash
  • A light layer for the ride back late in the afternoon
  • A hair tie, trust us

Reef days

Snorkeling Hol Chan or diving the wall is the highlight for a lot of our guests. A few things make it far more comfortable.

  • A rash guard or swim shirt. It’s the easiest way to avoid a burnt back after an hour face-down in the water.
  • Your own mask, if you have one. Tour operators supply gear, but a mask that fits your face makes a real difference.
  • Motion sickness tablets. The ride out to the Blue Hole is long and can get bumpy.
  • A quick-dry towel. Light, packs flat, and dries on the boat ride home.
  • Your dive certification card. Divers, take a photo of it too, just in case.

Mainland and jungle days

If you’re heading inland for cave tubing, Maya ruins or zip lines, swap the island uniform for something sturdier.

  • Closed-toe shoes with grip, like trail runners or water shoes with a proper sole
  • Lightweight long pants and a breathable long-sleeve shirt for bugs and branches
  • Insect repellent. The jungle has more mosquitoes than the breezy caye.
  • A small daypack with water, snacks and a light rain jacket
  • A change of clothes to leave in the van for the drive back

You’ll only need this kit for a day or two, so one outfit is plenty.

Golf cart essentials

Golf carts are how everyone gets around Ambergris Caye. A few small things make cart life easy.

  • Your driver’s licence from home. Golf cart rentals ask for it.
  • A phone mount or a small clip. Handy for maps once you head north of town.
  • Sunglasses with a strap. The road north is bumpy.
  • A scarf or light jacket for evening rides. The breeze off the water feels lovely at night, and a little cool.

We always recommend grabbing the cart into San Pedro early, before the midday heat and the busiest traffic.

Evenings out

Island dinners are relaxed, even at the nicer spots. Think sundress, linen pants, a clean pair of sandals.

  • Leave the heels at home. Streets are sandy and some are unpaved.
  • Pack one dressier outfit. Perfect for a birthday dinner or a private chef night on your deck.
  • Bring a light layer. Restaurant air conditioning can be strong.

Money, documents and small stuff

  • Passport. Check it’s valid well beyond your return date.
  • Small US bills. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, and you’ll often get change in Belize dollars (2 BZD to 1 USD).
  • A credit card with no foreign transaction fee.
  • A reusable water bottle. Most visitors drink purified water, which is easy to buy at the village grocery.
  • Any prescriptions, in their original bottles.
  • A universal adapter isn’t needed if you’re coming from Canada or the US. Belize uses the same plugs.

What to leave behind

  • Heavy jeans. Too hot, and they never dry.
  • A full beach towel collection. Pack one quick-dry towel and check your villa listing for what’s provided.
  • Fancy jewellery. Saltwater and sunscreen aren’t kind to it.
  • Your alarm clock. You’re on island time now.

The short version

Swimsuits, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen, sandals, one nice outfit, one pair of real shoes. Everything else is a bonus, and the village shop has you covered if you forget something.

Belize packing list FAQs

What should I add to my Belize packing list for the rainy season?

From June to November, add a light rain jacket, quick-dry clothes, extra insect repellent and a dry bag for your phone. Showers are usually short and warm, so you won’t lose whole days to the weather.

Do I really need reef-safe sunscreen in Belize?

Yes. Put it at the top of your Belize packing list. Mineral formulas with zinc oxide are kinder to the coral, and a rash guard means you’ll need less sunscreen on reef days.

What if I forget something?

Don’t worry. There’s a grocery store and a pharmacy inside the village gates, and plenty of shops in San Pedro. Imported brands can cost more on the island, so bring any favourites from home.
