The Ambergris Caye Guide: 10 Best Things to Do on the Island

The best things to do on Ambergris Caye are simple. Snorkel the Belize Barrier Reef, tour the island by golf cart, eat fry jacks for breakfast, and spend at least one afternoon doing nothing at all.

This Ambergris Caye guide is the list we hand our own friends when they visit. It covers how the island works, what’s worth your time, and when to come.

Ambergris Caye Guide: How the Island Works

Ambergris Caye is Belize’s largest island, long and skinny, with the reef running just offshore. San Pedro is the only town. Its sandy streets are full of golf carts, bakeries, and dive shops.

A few things to know before you land:

  • Golf carts are how everyone gets around. Rent one for the week and the island is yours.
  • North of the bridge feels quieter. The road gets bumpier, the resorts spread out, and the beach bars get more relaxed.
  • The east side faces the reef. The west side faces the lagoon and gets the sunsets.
  • Prices are often listed in Belize dollars. It’s fixed at two Belize dollars to one US dollar, and US cash is accepted almost everywhere.

10 Best Things to Do on Ambergris Caye

1. Snorkel Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley

This is the trip everyone talks about on the flight home. Hol Chan Marine Reserve sits roughly four miles south of San Pedro and was Belize’s first marine reserve, protected since 1987.

You’ll float through the reef channel with turtles and schools of fish. Then it’s on to Shark Ray Alley, where docile nurse sharks share the water with southern stingrays. The kids will talk about it for years. So will you.

Most tours include the park entry fee, but ask when you book. The reserve raised its entrance fee this year, so prices vary by operator.

2. Dive the Belize Barrier Reef

Certified divers, this one’s for you. The reef sits so close to shore that many dive sites are a quick boat ride from the dock.

For a bigger day out, book a full-day trip to the Great Blue Hole. It’s an early start and a long boat ride, but divers put it on their lifetime lists for a reason.

3. Take a Golf Cart to Secret Beach

The name is a running joke on the island. Secret Beach is now the most popular attraction on Ambergris Caye.

It sits on the lagoon side, where the water is shallow enough to wade out hundreds of yards, and there’s usually less seaweed than on the east side. Pull up a chair in the water, order a rum punch, and let your feet go pruney.

Our tip: Go as early as you can. The road is bumpy, so pack your patience and a towel for the cart seat.

4. Spend a Day at Mistico Beach Club

Staying with us? Your boat shuttle to Mistico Beach Club is included. Grab your sunglasses, hop on the boat, and let the salt breeze wake you up.

On stays of three nights or more, every guest receives a complimentary round trip to the beach club, along with a complimentary welcome drink and VIP service at the club.

5. Start the Day with Fry Jacks

Fry jacks are puffy, golden pockets of fried dough. They’re Belize’s favourite breakfast, and you should eat them at least three times.

Head to a beachfront café in town early. Estel’s Dine by the Sea is famous for fry jacks served with honey and mango jam, and the porch seats come with a pelican show.

6. Eat Like a Local in San Pedro

Some of the best meals on the island come out of small family kitchens. Two of our favourites:

  • Elvi’s Kitchen: a San Pedro institution with roughly four decades of history. Go for the seafood.
  • El Fogon: known for family-style Belizean cooking and homemade juices like horchata and tamarind.

Visiting between June and February? That’s lobster season, when Caribbean lobster shows up grilled or in garlic butter all over town.

7. Catch a Sunset on the Lagoon Side

The east side gets the sunrise. The west side gets the show at the end of the day.

Drive your golf cart north to a lagoon-side spot like The Truck Stop, order something cold, and watch the sky go orange over the water. Bring a light layer for the ride home.

8. Fish the Flats

Belize is serious fishing country. The flats around the island hold bonefish, permit, and tarpon, and local guides know exactly where they’re hiding.

Most trips are catch-and-release. Our concierge can match you with a guide who suits your experience level.

9. Day-Trip to Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is Ambergris Caye’s laid-back little sister. It’s a quick water taxi ride away, with no cars and a slow, barefoot pace.

Wander the main street, swim at the Split, and grab lunch from a grill on the sand. Head back to your villa before dinner.

10. Head to the Mainland for Ruins and Caves

Want a bigger adventure? Book a day trip to the mainland to climb Mayan temples at Altun Ha or Lamanai, or float through caves on an inner tube.

These are full days, so plan one for mid-week when you’ve had your fill of beach time.

When to Go: An Ambergris Caye Guide to the Seasons

There’s no bad time to visit, but each season has its own personality.

  • January to April: Dry, sunny, and the busiest time of year. Book early for the best villas.
  • May and June: Warm, quieter, and good value. San Pedro’s Lobsterfest usually lands in June.
  • July to November: Hurricane season, with more rain and the lowest prices. Travel insurance is smart.
  • December: The holiday crowd arrives, so plan well ahead.
