You’ll eat well here. Really well. And the best meals aren’t always the fanciest ones. A paper plate of tacos from a street cart can beat a white tablecloth any day.

Here’s how we’d eat our way through a week, from first coffee to last cocktail.

Breakfast: it’s all about fry jacks

If you learn one Belizean word, make it fry jack. These are pillows of dough fried until puffy and golden, then torn open and filled with beans, eggs and cheese. Some people drizzle them with honey. All of them go back for more.

Where to get them

Estel’s Dine by the Sea. A San Pedro classic right on the beach, with sand under your feet and the reef out front. Order the fry jacks with eggs and beans.

The Fry Jack House. In the middle of town, and the name tells you everything. Get there early.

Lily’s Treasure Chest. Another beachfront favourite, with tables right by the water and plenty of room for a bigger crew.

Our tip

We always recommend grabbing a golf cart into San Pedro early to beat the crowd. By 9am the best tables are gone. By 10am the fry jacks might be too.

Not feeling the drive? Coffee on your deck and a mango from the Farmhouse in the village is a fine start too.

Lunch: toes in the sand

Lunch on the island is long and lazy. Find a beach bar, order something cold, and don’t look at the time.

Beachfront lunch spots

Mistico Beach Club. Take the boat shuttle over (about 15 minutes) and spend the afternoon. Stays of three nights or more include: A complimentary boat shuttle for every guest, plus a complimentary drink and VIP service at Mistico Beach Club.

The Pool Club. Right inside the village. Walk over, and settle in with a burger and a swim.

The beach bars along Front Street. Wander and pick whichever one has the best breeze.

What to order

Ceviche. Shrimp, fish or conch, cured in lime with onion, tomato, cilantro and a little heat. Conch season runs October 1 to June 30.

Conch fritters. Crispy, chewy, perfect with a cold Belikin.

Fish tacos. Simple and fresh, the way they should be.

Street food: the locals’ lunch

Some of the best food on the island comes from small stands and carts. Follow the line of locals.

Salbutes and garnaches. Small fried tortillas piled with chicken, cabbage and salsa.

Panades. Crispy turnovers stuffed with fish or beans.

Tacos. Cheap, fast and everywhere in town.

Bring small bills. Most stands are cash only.

Sunset drinks: the lagoon side wins

Here’s a little island secret. Most visitors watch the sunrise over the sea. But the sun sets over the lagoon, on the west side of the island. That’s where Mahogany Bay Village sits.

So the best sunset seat might be your own.

Your villa deck. Rum punch, a bowl of salty chips, and the sky turning pink. That’s the plan.

The village dock. Walk down at golden hour and watch the boats come in.

Secret Beach. A sunset afternoon with your feet in the water.

What to sip

Belikin. The local beer. You’ll see the label everywhere.

Rum punch. Belize makes good rum. Ask the bartender for something local.

A seaweed shake. Sounds odd, tastes like a creamy nutmeg milkshake. Try it once.

Dinner: fresh from the water

Dinner on the island means seafood caught that day.

What to look for

Lobster. In season from June 15 to February 14. Grilled with garlic butter is the classic.

Whole fried snapper. Crispy skin, sweet meat, rice and beans on the side.

Shrimp in coconut curry. Rich and warm, great with a squeeze of lime.

Where to go

Elvi’s Kitchen. A San Pedro institution that started as a takeout window and grew into the island’s favourite family restaurant. Sand floors, island charm, very good seafood.

Jyoto, inside the village. Sushi a few minutes from your door. Made with the island’s fresh fish, and it’s a nice change after a week of fry jacks.

Your own kitchen. Buy fresh catch in town or catch something fresh on your boat day and grill it on your deck. Or ask your concierge about arranging a private chef for a night in.

A few dining tips

Check for a service charge before you tip. Many places add one. If not, 10 to 15% is normal.

Book ahead for bigger groups, especially over holidays.

Ask what’s fresh. Menus change with the catch and the season.

Bring cash. Smaller spots may not take cards.

Grab Marie Sharp’s hot sauce. It’s on every table. You’ll want a bottle to take home.

The short version

Fry jacks for breakfast. Ceviche for lunch. Rum punch at sunset. Lobster for dinner. Repeat.

Where to eat on Ambergris Caye: FAQs

Do I need restaurant reservations on Ambergris Caye?

For two or four people, usually not. For groups of six or more, and over Christmas, New Year’s and spring break, book ahead. Your concierge can help.

Is there anywhere to eat inside Mahogany Bay Village?

Yes. There are restaurants and bars a short walk from your villa, including Jyoto for sushi, plus the Poolclub and a grocery store for nights in.

What’s the one thing I have to eat?

Fry jacks for breakfast, no question. If it’s in season, add grilled lobster (June 15 to February 14) and conch ceviche (October 1 to June 30).

And after all that eating, there’s nothing better than walking back to your own villa and a late swim in your pool. See which villas are open at M&B Luxury Villas and start planning your first breakfast.

Follow us and tag your us in your posts:

Instagram: @mb.luxuryrentals

Facebook: M&B Luxury Rentals

TikTok: mb.luxuryrentalsbelize

Save This Blog: Keep it handy for planning your seamless Belize getaway!

Our insider’s guide to where to eat on Ambergris Caye, from fry jacks at a beachfront café to ceviche with your toes in the sand and lobster dinners in San Pedro.

[4,22
29,25
post-1176","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-travel-tips","category-belize-guide","tag-mb-luxury-rentals","tag-mahogany-bay-village
["GET
